7/8 Music Appreciation (Intro to Music) gives each student an introduction into the ways people experience and enjoy music. By the end of the semester all students will be able to:
1. Properly analyze and describe the basic qualities and characteristics of an aural example of music (i.e. the 7 main elements of music)
2. Effectively form and express opinions about pieces of music based on observations.
3. Learn the basics of reading and writing music.
4. Compose/create original rhythms and melodies and perform them on recorders or in small groups on percussion instruments.
5. Identify the 5 instrument families.
Students will also receive an in-depth education on the seven historical periods of music, including the following:

- Renaissance (c. 1400 - c. 1600)
- Baroque (c. 1600 - c. 1750)
- Classical (c. 1750 - c. 1830)
- Early Romantic (c. 1830 - c. 1860)
- Late Romantic (c. 1860 - c. 1920)
- Post "Great War" Years (c. 1920 - Present)
